In 2016 I quit my full-time job, packed up my life, and started freelancing as a web developer from wherever I happened to be. For four years I moved — Mexico, Puerto Rico, Croatia, Italy, Germany, France, Portugal, Spain. I was chasing the dream most people only talk about: work for yourself, see the world, retire early if you can.

What I wasn't doing was planning.

I had no idea that moving between countries the way I was had tax implications I'd be untangling for years. I hadn't thought seriously about where I wanted to settle, where I wanted to retire, or what the rules were in any of the places I was living. I didn't even know that where you choose to live withinSpain matters enormously — Spain's regions are autonomous communities, each with their own tax rules. Inheritance tax, wealth tax, certain deductions — they can vary dramatically between Valencia, Madrid, Andalusia, or the Basque Country. Where you plant your flag in Spain is a financial decision, not just a lifestyle one. I was figuring it out as I went, and hoping for the best.

In 2020 I applied for Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa and arrived in Valencia a few weeks later — just days before Covid locked the country down. I've been here ever since.
